The Midwife Center Statement re: The Roe/Dobbs Decision 6.30.22

June 30, 2022

To The Midwife Center Community,

We want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the anxiety and concern that many in our community may have in light of the June 24, 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe/Dobbs affecting the reproductive rights and access to abortion for people in the United States.

The care provided at The Midwife Center embodies the midwifery model of care, which is the belief in bodily autonomy, access to accurate health information, and the right to individual decision-making. This includes the belief that our clients are the experts in their health care choices, social environment, and influences, including when and if they choose to become parents. In the United States, the maternal mortality rates and economic disparities currently affecting women and families of color, especially Black women and birthing people, are already at a crisis level, which means that access to comprehensive reproductive services is more critical than ever. The Midwife Center stands with our professional organization, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, in addition to global and national health and human rights organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians, Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the United Nations Population Fund, who have affirmed the right to safe abortion services.

While we do not provide abortion services at The Midwife Center, we will continue to provide access to the full range of contraceptive options (including long-acting reversible contraception), Plan B, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and comprehensive options counseling for our pregnant clients. The Midwife Center values your reproductive health and we will ensure our services for both well-person routine care, as well as more urgent gynecologic or contraceptive services, are met.

In solidarity,

The Midwife Center Staff and Board
